Bryan Welch, Author, Farmer & Media Executive

Bryan Welch is well-known for his optimism, sense of humor and his commitment to empowering people to live their own versions of the good life. His work is a green business success story, demonstrating unequivocally that it is possible to do well in business without destroying natural or human resources. As a boy herding goats in rural New Mexico, he formed an intuitive understanding of the intricate and interdependent relationships among plants,
animals and people. Over the years as a student and then business leader, he developed that intuition into the very model of a productive, balanced and sustainable life.

 

Welch is sought after by media and organizations for his expertise in green business, sustainability and publishing. He is an articulate and engaging guest. He has been interviewed by The Dallas Morning News, New York Post, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, Advertising Age, MediaWeek, FOLIO:, Minnesota Public Radio, Kansas Public Radio, the PBS series “Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska,” and Kansas Public Television’s “Sunflower Journeys.” He has presented before influential audiences at West Coast Green, The Annual LOHAS Forum, Green Festivals, the Social Venture Network Conference, The Green Business Conference, the University of Colorado and the University of Kansas.

 

Before starting Topeka, Kan.-based Ogden Publications (publishers of MotherEarth News, Natural Home and Garden, Utne Reader and other media brands) in 1996, he worked at newspapers in several states including the Louisville Times and Lafayette News (Colorado), The Pierce County Herald (Washington), The Logan Herald-Journal (Utah) and The Middletown Press (Connecticut). Welch graduated from the University of Denver and holds a master’s degree from Harvard University where he studied media policy and management at the Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School. Welch serves on the boards of directors of the MPA (Association of Magazine Media), the Social Venture Network and the Down Home Ranch Foundation. He and his wife Carolyn, raise grass-fed cattle, sheep, goats and free-range chickens at their farm, Rancho Cappuccino. They share their Kansas farm with donkeys, dogs and the rogue mule, Zero.
